What customers need to know about the Flame malware.

What is it?

A new malware, described as the most complex ever found, is receiving a lot of press attention these days (end of May 2012). Its practical and immediate impact on the average customer is limited. A good summary of what started the media attention can be found here, courtesy of Wired.

The malware consists of a huge amount of code (20MB if all modules are installed) and its full analysis is likely to take a very long time. It has apparently been actively installed since a couple of years. Some of the module features include leaking confidential information, capturing screens and network trafic, eavesdropping on Skype conversations, etc...

How does it spread?

It is not spreading actively as a conventional virus would but appears to be installed in targeted governmental attacks, most likely through infected USB sticks and zero-day exploits. The geographic distribution of the currently known infection seems to indicate it is the work of "Western" governmental agencies.

What is the risk for a normal customer?

The risk of one of your users being infected by a typical drive-by-download is nil. The risk of being infected by standard network channels is close to zero unless you happen to work in a close relationship with targeted entities. The risk of being infected directly is zero, unless you are yourself a potential target for "Western" governmental agencies attacks.

Most anti-virus vendors, including F-Secure, are currently adding detection and removal for its various modules.

Closing thoughts.

This malware demonstrates how problematic the current IT eco-system is. Any individual computer is likely to have so many running processes, so many open tcp/ip connections, that it is almost impossible to define what a normal clean state is. This is why we encourage you to take advantage of all the F-Secure Client Security features (application control, traffic monitoring, anti-virus, on-line reputation system, etc...).

How we evolved from simple viruses to this incredibly complex landscape was the topic of a recent presentation I gave in Utrecht. You can download it here.
